I have just had a crack at changing the element on my fan oven. Lots of smoke now. Is that normal?

Normal in theory - there's a factory oil coating that needs to be burnt off before you can eat anything the oven cooks..

Agreed with other reply. Manufacturers put a protective coating on the element to avoid any atmospheric interruption with them before use. It needs to be burnt off to begin with it will smell a bit and be a bit smokey but shouldn't take too long to clear.

I’m actually really happy with the repair. Smoking has stopped and it it cost £14 rather than buying a new one. Thanks guys!
